We live in the age of instant celebrity and it is hard to avoid images of people who are famous just for being famous. The media, especially magazines, television and the internet are responsible for this, although they pass the buck back to us, saying that they are merely giving us what we want to see. As a result of this, there are undeniable advantages to being famous, and celebrities are rewarded in myriad ways, from plum movie roles to product endorsements. Another recent phenomenon is the huge popularity of reality shows, and their ability to make the most unlikely of people into superstars.

Reality shows have been responsible to pushing a new breed of people into the media spotlight. These are people who, upon even the most casual examination, are lacking in any talent or skill that justifies their place in the limelight. Often times, all that is required of them is to act so bad that the viewer is riveted to the television screen. Many of these people have been able to turn their larger than life screen personas into a lucrative business, and it is impossible to avoid seeing them at events attended by media heavyweights.

There is an old adage that any publicity is good publicity. There are too many examples of this to enumerate, and one comes across it regularly when a famous person resorts to some desperate act or another in order to revive a flagging career. There have also been instances of young women whose sole claim to fame have been homemade sex videos starring themselves, and they have managed to turn this into their stepping stone to stardom. This is so ubiquitous that it is a common joke that a sex video is the way to become famous.

As a result of the financial rewards that come the way of celebrities, people, especially those in their teens and mid twenties are desperate to become famous. They are not interested in working hard to achieve their objectives, since it is proven to be far more rewarding to be badly behaved. Most unfortunately, what people do not understand is that there is usually a steep price to be paid for such instant celebrity. The public is a fickle master and it can drop a person as easily as it elevated him or her to the heights of stardom. Besides, for every person who managed to achieve a breakout, there are far more who have nothing to show for their exploits. What people don t realize is that most such reality stars are only promoted by the media in order to get more viewership.

It would be far more useful to look at one of the various cautionary tales that abound in the media. One should study them carefully before making any decisions that will impact the future course of one s life. There is a lot to be said for working hard and achieving one s goals instead of taking a short cut to fame and fortune.
